When my toddler was in school instead of themes they would focus on “investigations” focused on science. This could include anything from Hydrology (yes, the study of water and they used that term!) to Birds. Within these investigations they would reenforce Montessori methods. They would do tracing, language skills and more. It was a great way to get the kids curious and engaged. We have adopted this method as well, and here’s how:

WALKS

We take daily walks outside and this is where most investigations start. Our walks are very important to our family at this time. The physical activity, fresh air and engagement with the nature around us has been vital to our well being and happiness.

OBSERVATIONS

My toddler is already inquisitive and asks lots of questions on what they see. I encourage this by pointing out interesting things that I see. We wonder out loud why things are the way they are and my toddler will often try to come up with an answer.

OBJECT HUNTING

as we walk we take in our surroundings and find an object along the way. Treasure could be flowers, leaves, sticks, rocks, pine cones.

INTEREST

When we get home, it will usually be apparent what my toddler is most interested in because they will continue the conversation. We usually have some treasure that corresponds and if we do that’s wen I use our materials.

TOOLS

Different investigations will require different tools but I’m always on the hunt for open ended toys that can prove useful to us on any given investigation. This is where applying Montessori methods and activities comes in. Our favorite tools are our a) magnification blocks b) Visual Dictionary c) PK Workbook. We will reference the Visual Dictionary first to see if we can find any more information on what we found or the investigation topic and I’ll read a few snippets and I’ll give my toddler time to ask questions.  We also like to use d) watercolors or e) color pencils and e) paper to make diagrams or etchings of the nature. Even though this is a science investigation we use Montessori arts and crafts to delve deeper into our subject.
