How Can I Define My Curls?
Today’s Topic: How Can I define My Curls
We hear this question often in our salon. Jacqui, our advanced cosmetologist with over 20 years of experience, will take the lead answering this frequently asked question. Thank you, Jaqui!
When it comes to curl definition start with a “CLEAN PALETTE”
Just about every natural I know has a spray bottle with something mixed in it. Natural girls love products. We want poppin’ curls and we buy products, diy products and we slather our potions and concoction’s trying to retain moisture and define our curls. Imagine a strand of hair and on Monday and we put on products…Tuesday we put on more product….Wednesday more product but a different mix….Thursday spray bottle…Friday night lights; extra product! Sunday comes and we co-wash and deep condition. More product. Rinse and repeat.
At some point the products that used to work, don’t work anymore. Why? Product build-up is most likely the culprit. Yes, there are other factor’s like the formulation of the product changed, physical and environmental changes that can affect our hair, but the first thing I tell my clients to do is to CLARIFY and add product back in one at a time to identify if it was product build up on the strand or if there is truly a need to change products. CLARIFYING is scary to naturals because it strips the strands down to a Clean Blank Palette, and if the CLARIFYING SHAMPOO is too harsh; it can leave your strands dry. I tell my clients to clarify at least once a month, depending on how much product they are using on a regular basis. Twice a month may be necessary. Be sure to follow with a moisturizing, detangling conditioner.
How often do you clarify your hair? And what have your results been?
